The dorm packing lists online are padded with stuff you’ll never touch. Here’s the short version — the essentials that actually earn their space in a shared little room, starting with the ones that matter most.

Dorm mattresses are brutal — fix the bed first.

A bed you’ll actually sleep on

Dorm mattresses are brutal, and this is the best money you’ll spend. A Twin XL mattress topper, real Twin XL sheets (they’re longer than a normal twin), and one good pillow turn a plywood bunk into somewhere you’ll actually rest. Everything about the semester is easier after real sleep.

Chargers and cables on a desk
One surge protector solves the two-outlet problem safely.
2

Power and charging

Dorm rooms have about two outlets, always in the wrong spot. A surge protector with USB ports and a flat extension cord fix that safely — most schools allow a surge protector but ban cheap daisy-chained strips, so bring the right one. Add a compact charger for the phone and laptop.

Laundry, handled

You’re doing your own laundry now — make it painless. A pop-up hamper (ideally a backpack-style one you can carry to the machines), a box of detergent pods, and a small folding drying rack for the stuff that shouldn’t go in a shared dryer covers it.

Bath basics for the hall shower

If the bathroom’s down the hall, a portable shower caddy carries everything in one trip. Add quick-dry towels (they don’t stay damp in a small room), a robe, and a pair of shower shoes — non-negotiable in a shared bath.

Warm string lights over a cozy bed
Warm light the harsh overheads never give you.
5

Light it and make it yours

Dorm overhead lighting is famously harsh. Warm string lights (the removable, no-damage kind) and a small desk or clip lamp make the room feel like yours and give you decent light for reading without the fluorescents. Command strips keep it all deposit-safe.

The laptop and tech

A good pair of headphones is essential when your roommate’s awake and you’re not. In a shared room a laptop lock adds peace of mind when you run to class. And since the laptop is the one thing you carry everywhere and use the most, a skin protects it from scratches and makes it unmistakably yours.

Skip these

A printer (use the campus ones), a second mini-fridge, most of the decor, and anything you’re buying “just in case.” Bring less, live in it a week, and grab only what you actually miss. And once you’re in, our dorm organization guide makes it all fit. More back-to-school guides are on the way.
